Job Description
This interdisciplinary project investigates the evolution of petro-societies, cultures and oil cities in the 20th and 21st centuries Arab World with a focus on the region as the nexus of global connections in the context of the Global Crossroads research initiative promoted by the Division of Arts and Humanities. The project also contributes to the field of Energy Humanities, an important topic in the framework of the COP28 UAE.<br><br>The research assistant will be overseen by Prof. Nelida Fuccaro and is expected to contribute to original research on the spatial and material worlds created by the oil industry in the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula through fieldwork, the perusal of archival materials (primarily in Arabic), and publications.<br><br><strong>The focus of this Kawader position will be on two interrelated sub-projects:<br></strong><ul><li>The transformation of spaces of trade and consumption in UAE Cities in the age of oil.</li><li> The new visual and material cultures promoted by the oil industry across the region with particular reference to new networks of circulation of consumer items and cars, and the creation of new networks of technical and transport infrastructure such as roads, petrol stations, and airports. <br></li></ul><strong><u>Responsibilities<br></u></strong><ul><li>Conduct research on archival documentation and produce subject-specific briefs and literature reviews.</li><li>Conduct interviews in fieldwork sites and submit bi-monthly reports on the progress of the two sub-projects. </li><li>Update and maintain the project’s oil database and help with the development of a website.</li><li>Collaborate with NYUAD Faculty, external collaborators and contribute to the activities of the project’s international network of researchers.</li><li>Participate in conferences and related events both locally and internationally, both as paper presenter and attendee, and provide briefs.</li><li>Produce peer reviewed articles and contribute to the project’s publications.<br></li></ul>The candidate will also work on individualized research projects under the supervision of the faculty during the duration of his/her tenure.<br><br><strong><u>Required Qualifications<br></u></strong><ul><li>Bachelor Degree in History and/or Arab Area Studies<br></li></ul><strong><u>Preferred Qualifications<br></u></strong><ul><li>Master Degree in History and/or Global Studies<br></li></ul><strong><u>Essential Skills<br></u></strong><ul><li>Bilingual Arabic and English language.
