Position: Media and Communications Officer

Location: Aden/Lahj Office

Grade:4b

Contract Length: till Dec 2023 (with a possibility of renewal)

The Opportunity:

Gateway is a USAID-funded education initiative which aims to ensure safe and equitable access to quality education through the formal school system for Yemeni boys and girls, in both host and internally displaced persons (IDP) communities, and those with special needs. This goal will be achieved through four interrelated objectives (also known as Intermediate Results (IRs)):

IR 1: Safe and Equitable Access to Education
IR 2: Improving teaching and learning
IR 3: Rehabilitation of educational infrastructure and provision of equipment
IR 4: Strengthened systems for education quality and management

The project focuses on supporting the Ministry of Education (MoE) in Yemen to strengthen education actors with ongoing trainings and follow up, providing materials to support literacy, numeracy, and active learning, while reducing conflict-induced trauma through the integration of social and emotional learning, restoring school routines to increase normalcy, trust, and enrolment, and expanding inclusive approaches that empower all girls and boys to complete their education.

Save the Children is seeking a Media and Communications Officer who will support the process of identifying, collecting, editing, and producing human interest stories, including feature stories for media and success stories for programmes, to build a comprehensive library of written and visual content that can highlight the achievements of the project. The post holder will be responsible for collecting professional photos in journalistic/documentation style.

He/she will adhere to policies and procedures that ensure the rights and well-being of families and children are prioritized in all materials produced and disseminated (voice, photo, video, written).

Key Areas of Responsibilities: 

Communications:

  • Support the implementation of the work plan to ensure a smooth, efficient, and strategic delivery of the needed technical media and comms support to the communications coordinator
  • Collect high quality video stories, audio and photos for the project
  • Collect, edit and create ready-to-use videos/photos for social media.
  • Ensure all content complies with SC policy and procedure (consent forms on file and available and go through sign off).
  • Field travel as needed to collect multimedia and communications material. 
  • Work with different internal and external stakeholders, including SC programme teams, volunteers, partners’ staff, and community members, to gather relevant information and provide inputs to produce various documents
  • Support the media and comms coordinator to ensure the adherence to, and the understanding of, the Save the Children’s -and its donor’s- information and visibility policies by all staff in the country office and field offices.
  • Support the media and comms coordinator to proactively identify and gather powerful human-interest stories that can be used for donor reporting, media, and advocacy, in adherence with Save the Children’s child safeguarding and consent procedures.
  • Support the media and comms coordinator to translate, transcript, write and proofread all communications, media, and multimedia products produced in Yemen. 
  • Adhere to media and communications policies and procedures in Yemen.
  • Identify impactful stories, quotes, photos, videos, and pieces of information for social media use. 
  • Proofread and double-check all banners, posters, and other documents and ensure they are in line with Save the Children policies and guidelines.

  • Other responsibilities as delegated by the Media and Comms Coordinator.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.A degree with at least three years of experience in the domain of Media, Communications and Journalism.
  • Ability to work in both Aden and Lahj is a must
  • Excellent photography and videography skills
  • Outstanding skills in using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, After effects, Premier
  • A university degree or proven experience in corporate social media management with evidence of successful management of international corporate social media accounts.
  • Proven experience in producing communications and media content for a wide range of audiences with different styles, with an innovative and creative approach.
  • Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills in English & Arabic, for a wide range of different audiences including children, families, donors, journalists and the ‘general public’
  • Evidence of versatile, creative and highly engaging storytelling skills.
  • Significant editorial experience, with the ability to proofread, edit and change the writing style in order to tailor the text for different purposes. 
  • Previous experience working in international non-profit organization and/or international media broadcasters is highly preferable.
  • Excellent planning, management and coordination skills, with the ability to organize a demanding workload comprised of diverse and challenging tasks and responsibilities
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy 
  • Commitment and interest in Save the Children’s mission, vision and values. In particular, a good understanding of Save the Children mandate and child focus and an ability to ensure this continues to underpin our support.
