Job Description

Key Accountabilities & Activities:

Surgical:

  • Observe surgical procedures and assist surgeons where possible.

Inpatient responsibilities:

  • The fellow will attend the inpatient rounds with the surgeons.
  • Assist patients and their families by providing information on the in-patient treatment and post-discharge care.

Clinical

  • Attend Out-Patient clinics.
  • Consult and examine patients under the supervision of the Chief of Surgery/Orthopedic Surgeon/General Surgeon.
  • Develop an individualized plan of care from initial observation of surgical and non-surgical treatment.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the indications, risks and limitations of commonly performed procedures to determine the most appropriate and effective methods of managing the patient’s diagnosis from a surgical and non-surgical perspective.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of sports equipment, particularly protective devices intended to allow the athlete to continue competition.
  • Participate in peer-review meetings and discussions.
  • Keep an accurate logbook of all clinical activities.
  • Perform on-call duties as agreed with the Chief of surgery.

Research and Education:

  • Participate in Aspetar’s Research and Education program as directed by the Chief of Surgery in collaboration with the Director of Research and Director of Medical Education.
  • Participate in the Sports Surgery Training Centre (SSTC) education activities.

Patient Safety:

  • Attend and successfully complete competencies which focus on patient safety initiatives implemented within Aspetar Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Hospital. Patient Safety Training is an annual requirement, to include all organizational leaders, staff, service and contracted providers.

Required knowledge and Experience:

  • At least five years of clinical experience post primary medical degree (MD/MBBS/BMChB or equivalent)
  • Registered with the relevant licensing authority in home country as a specialist Orthopedic Surgeon.

  • Ability to motivate patients towards recovery / full performance and athletic potential.
  • Ability to work well independently as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

  • Demonstrable intellectual, conceptual, integrative, qualitative and analytical abilities (for example, measuring, calculating, reasoning, problem-solving).
  • Demonstrable social and behavioral attributes such as empathy, compassion, listening skills, open-mindedness, perseverance in the face of challenge and adversity, emotional stability.
  • Good motor functions. A high level of manual dexterity, hand/eye co-ordination and sensory skills. Good degree of physical strength, fitness and stamina.
  • Commitment to the highest standards of professionalism, ethical values and the pursuit of clinical excellence.
  • Willingness to take accountability and responsibility for personal actions and decisions made.
  • Objectivity in making decisions, and in the giving and receiving of feedback and critical appraisal.

III. Working with Others

  • Ability to work well under pressure. Demonstrable advanced coping and stress management skills.

Education and Certification requirements:

  • Recognized basic medical degree qualification, e.g. MD or MBBS/MBChB
  • Recognized specialist qualification in Orthopedic Surgery and registered in home country as a Specialist Orthopedic Surgeon.

Application Submission starts beginning of January every year

Deadline for submitting applications is Mid-February every year

Fellowship Duration is One Academic Year, Starting 01st September every year
