Job Description

The Quantitative Synthetic Biology group at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks highly motivated and collaborative applicants to fill a Postdoctoral Associate position in synthetic biology. Projects will target various sources of context-dependence in synthetic biology, such as metabolic burden due to the competition of shared DNA replication and transcriptional/translational resources. As a representative example, a project may focus on how the behavior of common modules (e.g., toggle switch) is impacted by perturbations in the expression profiles of other genes, redistributing the common pool of scarce resources. Interested applicants are expected to lead the experimental efforts, though they are also welcome to get involved with modeling aspects of these projects (but it is in no way necessary). Additionally, projects in the lab also center around controlling cellular behavior both by developing genetic control circuits as well as external computer-based solutions using machine learning and optogenetics. Typically, projects involve the design and synthesis of DNA libraries containing multiple variants of synthetic gene constructs, which are then tested using the model organism E. coli. Candidates are also welcome to propose projects related to the work done in the lab. Members of our interdisciplinary team will leverage experiments to inform modeling/theoretical analysis and vice versa. For more information, visit https://netb.io/. The positions are available immediately with a flexible start date, initially for 2 years with the possibility of renewal based on performance.

Who should apply? The ideal candidate is self-motivated and hard-working with a PhD in synthetic biology, bioengineering, cellular biology, biophysics, quantitative/systems biology, or in a related field. The positions require experience in molecular and cell biology. Experience working with microplate readers and flow cytometers is desired, but not required. Successful candidates will take part in collaborative projects involving multiple laboratories from the US and Europe. Excellent communication skills in English, ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams, and scientific creativity are essential. We seek driven and enthusiastic individuals with a proven track record of independent research whose priority is to excel in their career while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

How to apply? Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and candidates will be considered until the positions are filled. To be considered, prepare in PDF format: (1) cover letter summarizing specific interest in the position; (2) curriculum vitae including full list of publications; (3) research statement summarizing research experience and interests and (4) the names and contact details of three references. If you have any questions, please contact Andras Gyorgy at andras.gyorgy@nyu.edu.

Salary The positions provide salary higher than internationally competitive rates, in addition to substantial benefits (generous housing, transportation and travel allowances, and educational subsidies for children), together with full health insurance and retirement contributions. The UAE does not levy income tax.

About NYUAD

NYU Abu Dhabi is a degree-granting research university with a fully integrated liberal arts and science undergraduate program in the Arts, Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Engineering.
