Embodying this spirit of the University, Georgetown’s Qatar campus undertakes education, research, and service in order to advance knowledge and provide students and the community with a holistic educational experience that produces global citizens committed to the service of humankind. We demonstrate the values of Georgetown University; seek to build upon the world-class reputation of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service; and work with our partner, Qatar Foundation, in its endeavors to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030.

Requirements

As part of an ongoing book project about the history and politics of Arab identity in the twenty-first century led by Prof. Safwan Masri, Georgetown University Qatar seeks an hourly Research Assistant to provide support with literature reviews, particularly production of research summaries.

Deadline: The review of applications will begin on April 15, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible.

This position is open to remote working arrangement. Candidates must be based in Qatar or the U.S. in order to qualify.

The Research Assistant will produce and edit formal, holistic summary documents addressing mostly preselected research resources (books, edited volumes, articles, etc.) related to the topic of Arab identity, addressing both the contemporary politics of identity and Arabism’s historical/sociological development. The primary focus will be on secondary academic sources, all written in English. Finalized summary documents will entail, for each particular source: 1) an executive summary of the book/article/volume (in full prose, including consultant’s own analysis, connecting the source’s ideas to relevant broader themes and key project research interests), 2) more detailed chapter summaries (as appropriate), and 3) collation of key quotes, bulleted with page numbers (as appropriate). The Research Assistant will collaborate with the broader project research team over weekly Zoom calls and by email to produce and edit these summaries for clarity and ensure their relevance to the broader project agenda and any new research goals as they arise throughout the year.

Work logistics: It is expected that the Research Assistant will work between 10 and 30 hours per week, depending on the availability, qualifications, and needs of the candidate as well as logistical requirements and budget of the project. Some research deliverables are time-sensitive, but the project team can also be flexible in structuring the deadlines and workload of this role, depending in major part on the availability of the preferred candidate. Candidates are requested to outline their preferences for hours worked per week in their cover letters (and this could change over time, for example increasing in summer months). The role is expected to begin in early spring (ideally in May), continue throughout the summer and end in October.

The applications should include: a formal cover letter, a resume/CV, and an academic-style (i.e., research-based) writing sample. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
