Job Description

<p>Job Summary:</p><p>We are seeking a skilled and experienced senior economist to join our team of sector specialists and economic researchers at a senior government body. The applicant will be responsible for validating and analyzing economic data and strategies, developing economic research briefs with a view to advising on economic policy at the national and sectoral level, clearly communicating complex economic concepts and ideas to diverse audiences including to senior government officials, and proactively building peers’ capacity. The applicant should be a seasoned economics expert with prior experience working at senior government levels on economic policy review and advisory.</p><p> </p><p>Key Responsibilities:</p><ul><li><strong>Economic data analysis and strategic advisory:</strong> lead the review and validation of national economic data including macro-economic and topical or sectoral metrics, as well as the review of economic plans, strategies, and repots to provide rigorous and coherent analysis and recommendations. </li><li><strong>Policy research and development, and thought leadership:</strong> lead the development of high-quality and relevant economic research, providing forward-looking economic policy advice and with focus on supporting coherent and strategic policy development across the country’s economic sectors. Must have the ability to undertake and guide research and analyze economic development issues within the broader framework of sustainable development, including but not limited to productivity, inflation, demographics, labor and trade.</li><li><strong>Leadership advisory:</strong> advise senior executive management on emerging and long-term economic trends affecting sustainable development, policy and programmatic implications based on a rigorous understanding of global economic trends and the opportunities and challenges they present for sustainable development in the region and locally. </li><li><strong>Communication and Collaboration:</strong> collaborate, as appropriate with other team members, departments, external stakeholders and potentially international organizations and Institutions or organizations, academia, and the private sector to collect data, investigate root causes, supplement analysis with relevant insights and know-how, and appropriately communicate outcomes or findings. Ability to communicate ideas in writing and in person, and ability to defend and explain difficult and complex issues in a clear and convincing manner, calibrating the narrative and the communication style to the type of audience and their level of seniority.</li><li><strong>Capacity Building:</strong> has ability- and takes initiative- to develop the potential of team members through inspired and tailored capacity building sessions or content. </li></ul><p> </p><p>Qualifications &amp; Experience:</p><ul><li>Fluent English speaker with excellent writing skills</li><li>Fluent Arabic speaker with strong Arabic writing skills is preferred</li><li>Master’s degree in Economics, Econometrics, Public Policy or a related field</li><li>PhD in Economics is preferred</li><li>A minimum of 15 years of experience with at least 3 years of experience advising senior government officials on economics and policy</li><li>A minimum of 5 years of experience in the region, and in Qatar preferably</li><li>Experience sourcing, assessing, and analyzing macro-economic data</li><li>Experience in developing, assessing, and measuring impact of economic plans and strategies</li><li>Proven track record in drafting economic papers, reports, briefs to non-technical audiences and to senior policy makers</li><li>Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills with ability to defend and explain complex economic concepts to technical and non-technical audiences</li><li>Working knowledge of economic modeling, forecasting and assessment</li><li>Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office</li><li>Familiarity of statistical software (eg. EViews, Stata, Gretl, etc.) is preferable</li><li>Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy</li><li>Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team</li><li>Excellent time management skills to meet deadlines</li></ul><p><br></p>
