<p>Mada Masr is looking to hire an editor to oversee and develop our Mada Digest editorial line.</p><p><br></p><p>Send CV and cover letter to: <strong>jobs@madamasr.com</strong></p><p><br></p><p>Deadline for applications: We will be processing applications on a rolling basis until we fill the position.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Responsibilities</strong></p><ol><li>Steering the editorial production of our daily, English-language press briefing, the Mada Morning Digest, which consists primarily of setting editorial throughlines for coverage of the most important affairs in Egypt and how they are being talked about in the domestic and regional media in collaboration with an editorial team that includes copyeditors and Digest writers;</li><li>Editing and ensuring quality publication of our twice-weekly Mada Talkshow Digest;</li><li>Providing feedback in a constructive and collaborative manner that will allow writers and copyeditors to develop their journalistic practice;</li><li>Coordinating with our business arm to ensure both products are marketed to new audiences while continuing to serve the needs of established audiences;</li><li>Working across editorial and business lines to develop new editorial offshoots and advancements of the Digest editorial line.</li></ol><p><br></p><p><strong>Qualifications</strong></p><ul><li>A keen sense of politics and current affairs rooted in a granular focus on what is published in Egypt’s domestic press and in regional outlets;</li><li>An ability to situate news events in their narrative and political context;</li><li>A desire to develop a collaborative editorial sensibility, which will empower those one works to pitch, refine and produce concise writing;</li><li>An ability to lead daily team meetings that will facilitate inclusion but also provide direction to collective thinking;</li><li>An ability to steer interventions in the news cycle from a clear idea of the wider institution’s editorial approach;</li><li>Be able to think about how editorial context interacts with market needs and be able to communicate that in the execution of editorial and business remits;</li><li>A strong interest in contributing to Mada’s aim of creating an institutional space that facilitates independent, self-funded journalistic practice;</li><li>Be able to communicate feedback that is actionable.</li></ul><p><br></p><p>Candidates should note that these skills will form the core competencies of the job. While an ideal candidate would have experience where these skills have been exhibited, the hired editor will receive strong support from Mada’s editorial team to grow into the role. We do not expect a candidate to necessarily exhibit all of the above listed skills on day one.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Benefits, salary placement, and HR</strong></p><p>Mada pays all of its employees according to placement along a sliding scale. Salary will be determined at a competitive rate according to experience relative to current staff’s experience and seniority. Annual contract renewals are a place to move an employee who has demonstrated improvement up the salary scale.</p><p>A minimum of two days of work from Mada’s office per week is necessary in order to facilitate closer collaboration with coworkers.</p><p><br></p><p>Mada Masr provides quarterly metric driven bonus schemes and social benefits packages, which include health insurance and social insurance.
